Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to draw blood in Oregon?

Great question!

Most Oregon healthcare facilities require applicants to complete a two part Phlebotomy program in order to qualify for employment as a Phlebotomist.

In The State of Oregon there is NOT a state Phlebotomy license to acquire.

A national Phlebotomy certification, although preferred by most employers, is also NOT required to gain employment.

Other state requirements may not follow these same guidelines.

The preferred Phlebotomy national certification for most hospitals and clinics is through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). https://www.ascp.org/content

Many clinics in Oregon may also accept Phlebotomy national certification through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). https://www.nhanow.com/

What if I am a current healthcare employee and my employer wants me to learn Phlebotomy for my current position?

In most cases, employers will need proof of a Phlebotomy course completion and a national certification. Please note that in order to apply to take a national exam a certain number of draws will be required depending on which certification you are looking to obtain.

ASCP requires 100 venous draws

NHA requires 30 venous draws and 10 capillary draws

Depending on your experience and comfortability level, RSP can offers and Introduction or an Advanced class.

In some cases, employers may also offer an employee to complete their draws at their current place of employment.

If I took a different Phlebotomy course in another state do I have to take another course to work in Oregon?

As long as you have proof that you successfully completed your course within the last 5 years, you should be able to apply for employment without having to retake a course.

If you would like to renew your skills and be updated on current procedures, in Oregon RSP offers Phlebotomy: Advanced which will give you opportunity to practice your skills while you search for new employment.

If your state or national certification has expired past 5 years, RSP offers Phlebotomy: Introduction, a course that thoroughly details all the aspects of the Laboratory In-Patient and Out-Patient experience in Oregon.

Is there a required attire for RSP classes?

Yes!

For Phlebotomy: Introduction all students must have a set of solid black scrubs; top and bottom. Any covered, comfortable walking or running shoe is acceptable. Shoes with open heels or intentional holes are not acceptable.

For Phlebotomy: Advanced, ASCP Exam Prep Course and NHA Exam Prep Course students must wear scrubs and any comfortable, covered shoe. Students can wear any appropriate pattern or color of scrubs of their choosing.

All classes have the potential to be exposed to blood during class activates as well as lab time.
